For those unfamiliar with her prior film and television work, it may come as a surprise that Angel Coulby has been in constant demand since 2001. First cast in the British television series “Orrible,” Angel has become a staple in British television appearing in the British television series: “Casualty,” “Having It Off,” “A Good Thief,” “Manchild,” “Making Waves,” “As If,” “Conviction,” “Vincent,” “Talk to Me,” and “The Visit.” In addition to guest starring for multiple episode arcs on 7 television series in the span of 7 years, Angel simultaneously appeared in 12 more television series and 6 more films during the same time period. That is quite a remarkable achievement and is a testament to a very dedicated and driven young actress.

One of Angel’s roles of significance was her portrayal of Katherine, the lady in waiting to Sophia Myles’s character Madame de Pompadour in the episode “The Girl In the Fireplace” for the British sci-fi series “Doctor Who.” This particular episode is a stand out episode of the series that is not only a fan favorite, but also won a Hugo and Nebula awards for best script and best dramatic presentation in 2007.

The fantasy series, which stars Colin Morgan as a young mythical wizard, has been a Saturday night ratings success since its debut in 2008.

BBC controller of drama commissioning Ben Stephenson said of the show: “With its mix of magic, adventure and humour, Merlin is perfect Saturday evening family television, and we are thrilled that Shine Television will be creating a new series for BBC One.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what adventures our popular young wizard, and his friends in Camelot, will go on in series three.”

The second series of Merlin launched earlier this year to a healthy 5.08 million viewers for BBC One and since averaged 5.15 million over its 10-episode run.

How are things shaping up between your characters Arthur and Gwen? Any signs of a simmering romance yet?
Bradley: Arthur’s started to realise that Gwen exists in this series. The problem is, the way the show was initially set up makes it very difficult to believe that Arthur would suddenly start wooing Guinevere. In the legends, Arthur sees Guinevere and instantly falls in love. We’ve not gone for that approach at all – he’s hardly noticed her! So I guess it’s more about developing the attractions to the inner character, which is a gradual process, and more of a build-up.

Angel: When Gwen joined, she was very keen on Merlin, but that’s kind of fizzled out. She does seem to like the boys, though! In this series, she gradually sees that Arthur has a good heart, and she believes she can help nurture that in him, so she stands up to him a bit more, and I think that impresses him. So just watch this space!

With the help of Merlin and Gwen he goes undercover, taking lodgings at Gwen’s house while the tournament is on. But Arthur is in for a shock when Gwen challenges him to give up his spoilt, lofty ways. Will he be able to shake the habits of a lifetime as easily as he did his princely robes, and why does he care so much what Gwen thinks anyway?

“Something about these people marks them out from the rest of their world, there is something unique and special about them, and somehow that is tied to their origin,” he says. The big-budget adventure TV series Merlin, which Murphy has co-produced with Johnny Capps, is the origin story of the future King Arthur and the wizard Merlin, a sort of Malory-meets-Smallville pitched at a family audience.

The story of King Arthur is constructed from a number of works, but particularly Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Latin work Historia Regum Britanniae (History of the Kings of Britain), written around 1138, and Thomas Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur, published in 1485. Most of the Arthurian adaptations for film and television – from 1915’s The Quest of the Holy Grail to Excalibur (1981), First Knight (1995), Merlin (1998) and The Mists of Avalon (2001) – are predominantly derivative of both, but particularly the latter.
